Red Light Therapy vs Infrared Sauna: Which Is Right?

They're often shelved together in the wellness aisle, and both names mention infrared, so it's easy to assume they're two versions of the same thing. They aren't. Red light therapy and infrared saunas work by completely different mechanisms, aimed at different goals — and once you see the distinction, choosing between them (or deciding to use both) gets straightforward.

The short answer

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to trigger cellular processes — collagen production, localised healing, reduced inflammation — without meaningfully heating you. An infrared sauna uses heat to raise your core temperature, make you sweat, boost circulation and drive whole-body relaxation. One is a light therapy that happens to sit in the red/infrared band; the other is fundamentally a heat therapy. Different tools, different jobs, and for many people they're complementary rather than competing.

Different mechanisms, different goals

The distinction is the entire point, so it's worth being precise. The therapeutic effect comes from the light itself, delivered at specific wavelengths, and a good panel stays relatively cool to the touch. An infrared sauna is the opposite: the benefit comes from the thermal load and your body's response to it — a mild cardiovascular-style stress, sweating, and the relaxation that follows. One targets your cells; the other targets your thermoregulation. That's why you can't simply substitute one for the other.

Which to choose

  • Skin, collagen, targeted healing, localised pain? Red light therapy is the more specific, better-evidenced tool. One clinical study observed real improvements in skin tone, wrinkle depth and elasticity after regular red light use — a targeted effect a sauna simply doesn't replicate.
  • Whole-body relaxation, circulation, the sweat-and-unwind ritual? An infrared sauna fits that better.
  • Recovery? Both have support. A meta-analysis concluded photobiomodulation can be effective for managing delayed-onset muscle soreness, while sauna heat aids circulation and relaxation. If recovery is the goal, they attack it from different angles.

Can you do both?

Yes — and many people do, precisely because they address different things. There's no established rule requiring you to pick one, and the mechanisms don't conflict. A common pattern is using red light for targeted skin or joint goals and a sauna for general relaxation and circulation. If budget or space forces a choice, let your primary goal decide: specific and cellular points to light; whole-body and thermal points to heat.

The honest caveats

A few things worth knowing before you spend. Infrared saunas are genuinely popular — search interest rose more than five-fold between 2004 and 2023 — but much of the strongest long-term sauna evidence actually comes from traditional Finnish (dry) saunas, not infrared cabins, so don't assume the two are interchangeable in the research. Dramatic “detox” claims also lack rigorous support beyond your body's own built-in processes. Infrared cabins run cooler than Finnish saunas (around 110–150°F) but still produce a deep, sweat-inducing heat, so anyone with a cardiovascular condition, heat sensitivity or photosensitivity should check with a clinician before either.
